Obsessing over Youtube Numbers and Stats

Hey Folks,

So anyone out there doing anything online, be it videos, blogging, podcasts, whatever probably knows about Obsessing and numbers.

I've even blogged about this before - and I'm considering making it a weekly thing.

Recently I've had this site (Vidstatx) permanently stuck in an open tab (hell I'm almost ready to make it a home page)

They Recently launched a new Ranking Proximity feature

It shows you other youtubers in your subscription bracket. (I've added a gray line to represent who I'm between and an orange box around the closet 3 youtubers on either side.)

What's amusing is, I think I may have heard of only one of these people (on the whole list). Though that doesn't really surprise me much, I don't wander youtube looking for new people these days. I'm too busy making things.

So what do you do with this information!?

Well ones first instinct might simply be to use this list as a guideline of who you're trying to beat, and who you're watching out for.

It's kind of like being in slow moving traffic on the freeway. You're watching cars in the other lanes. You know you've switched over from behind that Yellow Rav 4, and now you're ever watchful anytime it seems to be in a faster moving lane then you... and now, they're you enemy. Ironically minutes later when you switch over behind that same Rav 4 and that lane speeds up, passing all the other lanes by, you're now allies on the same time.

This is how this list works.

Healthy competition. Anyone who's using youtube as a means to be better then other people, probably needs to get out of the house and join a club IRL. This list now shows you other people to watch, learn from, collaborate with and in a good way compete with.

Number Don't Mean It's Good!

Hey Folks,

So you'd think I'd be in a better mood. To be honest this whole day has felt a little off, I slept on and off for about 4 hours then finally woke up at some stupid early hour.

But mid way through my day, after going through my normal routine of checking my sites I find to my surprise this.

Yep once again youtube has featured one of my videos. Another vlog

as a side note, I have no idea why it is, but the videos I feel the least about, I put the least effort in to, I do just to keep myself going (and mainly vlogs) seem to get featured 5 times more often then the videos I put my heart and soul in.

That's some kind of cruel joke, or irony or something, I don't know.

Anyway - either way, I'm totally thankful anytime a video gets featured no matter what video it is. It's totally humbling to watch the numbers go crazy, see the comments build up - even the silly morons/haters/children that leave awesome things like today's comment of the day.

People must just see dreadlocks and awesome that means drugs. I don't really get it, do you really think if I were stoned I could sit there and edit a video with that many jump cuts?

Anyway, so here I am watching stats (obsessively), reading all the comments, which aren't really that bad as far as hate comments go - I've only been called Rob Zombie once so far, told my videos suck twice, nobody has called me a Caveman yet or told me to grow up... so honestly it's pretty tame.

Among being obsessive about stats is this damn site. It shows you hour by hour how many people have subscribed to your site (or in my case, how many have unsubscribed as well)... and now they've added a new feature that shows your landmark goals. It looks like this

Earlier in the day I was thinking to myself "I want to get to 10,000 subscribers by May, by my birthday" and now looking at this thing (if I wanted to believe it) I would have to wait 2 and a half years to make that mark!?!@$?$T^# WTF!?

So now I'm even more hell bent on my mission of getting 10K by May - hell it even rhymes, so it must be true!

I know these projections are only based on 54 channels so, which isn't enough to give a truly accurate scientific data - much like those people claiming Avatar is the best movie ever because the TV told them it is, because it won the big award, because it's got the biggest box office returns.

So the Twilight books are better then Dostoevsky?
Lady Gaga is better then Mozart?
The SlapChop is better then the... well actually the slapchop is pretty bad ass. So forget that one.

Hell by that logic in someway, Fred is better then entirety of the BBC.

These numbers, they don't mean anything. We knew Avatar was going to be a huge success right out of the gate because it was in our face.

So once again it's just a numbers game. If I had the Marketing of Avatar I'd of course be "better", but it doesn't mean I'd have most quality of substance of the Dr. Parnassus of youtube, who I assume is maybe the Receptionist, or Mysterguitarman.

Anyway time to stop obsessing about numbers and start making something I feel good about!

Working Together

Hey Folks,

It efforts to just be more productive and such - here I am online blogging.

Everyday can't be a vlog, and actually I don't even know that I could come up ideas fast enough to do so.

Which is why I've started a new video collab collective group.

I'm hoping to make it a place where people can find other people to collaborate on videos together.

It's also going to be a place for people to make suggestions for me to do.

Once Twice Three Times A Blogger

OK So I'm trying to make this thing a little more active, catch up on some things I've been meaning to blog about and just actually give the 4 and half people that actually watch this thing some thing to comment on.

We're number 17! We're number 17!

And so it goes the front page of youtube is a fleeting glory once held in a hand covered in slippery oil trying to grasp a marble made of mercury.

However a mere 3 days ago (which seems like eons) the video I directed and conceived was featured on the front page of youtube. Amy Vorpahl stars in the video and wrote the lyrics (and sang the song) and a cavalcade of people helped out on the production.

As for being pushed down to the 17th spot by day 3, no biggie. Project Awesome is a great concept and even to share page space with it is an honor. We got almost 400,000 hits in the few days on the front page and that's cool. So now onward and upward to whatever's next

While I was hanging at youtube live in the ever growing waiting line for commoners with Star Wars Dork I was interviewed by an odd little man in a odder fake mustache. I never had the chance to ask the man "Hey, who the fuck are you anyway" but soon it faded into the muddle of memories and I quickly forgot it existed till Lyssa IM'd me a link and I posted it here for all of you.

I was invited to have a formal sit down and interview with the blond twigling herself Maria from poptub.

Though the interview was a few minutes long, my screen time glory lasts from 0:47 to 0:48 - ah the majesty of my 1.5 seconds. God bless Andy Warhol.

Youtube Live Spotting - Starwarsdork

Well an unnecessary evil of the whole not being a 50,000+ subscriber mega eStar was standing in a long line with your printed out paper eTicket.

Youtube Live Spotting - Lisa Nova

With an estimated 1500 to 2200 guests at youtube live (most of which cam equipped with a recording device) it's to be expected if you were there, you're on "tape" somewhere.

I've just begun to really been start the search but I think appearing in a Lisa Nova video is a pretty good place to start.

But how many times can you find me?

Writers Group

Last Sunday I finally met with my newly formed writers group.

We sat around pitched ideas for holiday inspired sketches. There were about half a dozen of us, and we each left with an idea to work on for this coming Sunday. So something big is brewing at for the SamProof channel. It's just got 600% more funnier.

or something. there's math involved I swear!

What, math is funny!

We don't have an official name yet, but we don't have a first video or even sketch script yet so no worries. but the group itself is made up of all Upright Citizens Brigade Alumni - so you know it's gonna be good.

Youtube Live Part 1

Getting back in to the swing of things I figure I haven't posted enough on here lately, so prepare to have your minds blown in the world of blogging.

I haven't the foggiest what any of that really means. But the point being I've been lack in my blogs, and now I'm gonna get jiggy with it. I hope that clears things up.

I don't want to go completely crazy here and over load you with reading, so to get started it's been about two weeks since Youtube Live. It was a pretty crazy little event, especially for me. I went up with only plans of getting there and getting home, and nothing in between. No Hotel Room, no real schedule, just a sense of adventure.

Before I go in to details (in an upcoming blog) Here's a quick video I did about the event.
